Title: Backseat Drivers
Key
Scriptures: Judges
1:29-32

Neither did Ephraim drive out the
Canaanites…Neither did Zebubulun drive out the
inhabitants of Kitron… Neither did Asher drive out
the inhabitants of Accho… For they
did not drive them out.
Have you ever had a backseat
driver in your car? It’s that voice in
the back of your car (mind) that tells you which direction to go and how to get
there. It’s that voice that states you
are heading the wrong way and doing it all wrong. Wouldn’t we all be better without them?
Backseat drivers often tell you
when to stop worshiping God. Job and his
wife and blind Bartimaeus with the crowd are just two
examples. They ignored the back seat
drivers and stayed on the right road.
The 12 spies came back with their
reports from the land flowing with milk and honey. Joshua and Caleb said, “let’s
load up and go at once. We will possess the land and drive out the
enemies.” As Joshua and Caleb were ready
to go, they had 10 guys in the backseat.
These 10 spies said, “No way, we are not able, there are giants, we are
going the wrong way, STOP!”
Thankfully, Joshua and Caleb
never allowed the spirit of the backseat drivers to get a hold of them. Don’t let the voices of the distracters; the
complainers, and the nay-sayers distract you. Keep driving forward on that highway of
holiness, on that straight and narrow road.
Drive out all the enemies of your soul.
Jesus died between two
thieves. There are two thieves beside us
who can steal from us. The two ‘thieves’
are Yesterday and Tomorrow. There are
things in your past like hurt, rejection and pain that can steal your joy
today. There are things in your future
like worry, concern and fear that can rob you of hope and peace. These two backseat drivers talk to you to
steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10)
David said, “This is the day
which the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it (Today). We can be
glad today because the past doesn’t hurt us and tomorrow doesn’t worry us. This is the way God wants us to live.
Don't spend your time on the voices that don't
count. Tune out the worthless voices so that you will have more time to tune in
the valuable ones. Remember, your friends will get you closer to God; your
enemies will get you further from Him.
Ignore those backseat drivers and drive forward.
I am your constant companion.
I am your greatest helper or your heaviest burden.
I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.
I am completely at your command.
Half the things you do, you might just as well turn over to me,
and I will
be able to do them quickly and correctly.
I am easily managed; you must merely be firm with me.
Show me exactly how you want something done, and after a few
lessons I will
do it automatically.
I am the servant of all great men.
And, alas, of all failures as well.
Those who are great, I have made great.
Those who are failures, I have made failures.
I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a
machine.
You may run me for profit, or run me for ruin; it makes no
difference to me.
Take me, train me, be firm with me and I will put the world at
your feet.
Be easy with me, and I will destroy you.
Who am I?
I am a HABIT!
We must develop the
habit of church attendance, prayer and praise and ignore the voices that do not
matter.
